The Geathers gang.....

  • I have a fairly close relationship with the Geathers family ("fairly" being the operative word), based upon a friendship Robert and I developed years ago. If schedules hold true, he and I are meeting for dinner soon. I constantly bug him about the success his family has enjoyed on the gridiron and I plan to renew my jealous banter when we meet again.

For eight years straight, Robert has held true to the belief that Kwame will be the most successful member of the "gang" when the final pages are written on their respective careers. "Even Jumpy" I always add...... "Even Jumpy", he predictably repeats.

I'm still not sure if I subscribe to Robert's opinion on the matter, goodness knows the depth of his own career after leaving Georgia as a 19 year old kid is nothing short of amazing. But Robert is not someone you really want to argue with, lol. Aside from Moreno and Albert Hollis (do you remember that stud), he is the most physically sculpted football player I have ever known on a personal level at Georgia.

I dont know why I felt like sharing this with you tonight, but I did. Keep a close eye on KG. Not just next year with the mountain of a man in front of him on the depth chart, but for the long term. It will be fun to watch his career develop. Outside of the public's eye, the Geathers are one of the nicest, most humble and accomodating familys I have ever come to know.

I wish there was 10 more of them in Georgia's recruiting pipeline.

  • You're saying he is coming back for his senior year?

  • Yes. And when I talk about his career, I'm referencing the one at the next level. He'll be a second round lock. There was plenty of Georgia fans who mocked RG when he went pro. What they didnt take into account was Robert's young age and the injury he played through for over year. He was just beginning to develop when Cinnci came calling.

Look at his NFL career. He knows what it takes to succed, as does his Uncle, Dad, et, al. KG, I believe as well, will retire a multi-millionaire just like his those in his family who came before him.

Some folks just have NFL in their DNA.

I am not saying he won't stay for his senior year but I just don't see it. I mean if you look at our defense this upcoming year and think about 2013 there would be nobody left but him. I just think if this year as a defense we are successful he would be a big part of it and I think he would ride the wave out. JMHO> But I have always considered him gone after this upcoming year!

Lots of Dawgs have enjoyed successful NFL careers after having mediocre years in Athens.
    Danny Ware
    Patrick Pass
    Robert himself
    Terrell Davis
    Matt Robinson..to name a few.

Do you really think Danny has been better in the NFL then in Athens? He has played a few years in the NFL but I would hardly say its been "successful".... JMO

Agreed. Patrick Pass was a fullback for the Pats... right?
Similar situation. He's a role player. No different than while at UGA.

Yes, I think he also played for the Giants for a season.... I think the only people that had a better career in the NFL then UGA on LakeNormandawg's list are Terrell Davis and Geathers, the others were just role players in the NFL. Danny left Athens early and went undrafted, that to me was the start of the trend for our players leaving school early.

The 06' recruiting class had a big effect on UGA getting hit hard with players leaving early. That class really hurt us.

With a class full of high star-rated players who play up to their expectations, I guess their leaving early for the NFL is the 'penality' you often have to pay for with their commitment.

But I guess three years of their high skilled on-field performance is worth that one year of lost PT. The only problem with some of these players is that some are RSed for a year and we only actually realize two years of quality PT from them before they are gone.

Just the way it is with all schools and the chance you take with these highly-rated players, I guess.

    Go Dawgs!

  • He may or may not comeback but there will be more left - him, Ogletree, Swann, Moore, Dawson, Jenkins, Clemons, and then the crew coming in especially if we don't win the SEC this year. I know everyone likes to believe that but Bama and LSU did not lose all their talent so don't expect that to just be handed over. Also until I see us play a full game start to finish consistently and beat a ranked opponent thoroughly then I will be more of a believer. I think we can just want to see it and I don't think we just assume we would beat LSU or Alabama. LSU will be better next year - Jefferson is gone and they a guy who can play QB.

We need to get our players in the frame of mind of playing their Sr year especially if they have not won the title. If you win everything then I can see going pro. I can even somewhat understand the being in the first round and all. But I would much rather win a championship than to just leave early for the money. But I know that is me and I don't know the situations that the kids are facing so I don't hold it against them but I would like to see more of what happened this year - all our boys are coming back.

Patrick Pass was known as the "sideline stalker" while at UGA..Guy has a couple of Super Bowl rings and played that Magic number(5) years or so to draw the NFL pension..
Same with Danny..2 Super Bowl rings and is approaching Pension status..The average life of an NFL runningback is about 4-5 years..The NFL pension is about 60K or more per year for life..I'd call that a successful career while retiring at 34-35..

Based off what happened with Clifton Geathers at South Carolina, I would seriously doubt if KG returned. It was reported on a few Gamecock sites that the family was pushing him to leave despite his draft grade b/c "they" thought he was ready. This after his first real year in the rotation. I would imagine with KG's size and talent, he will be influenced to turn pro.

Kwame is not Clifton. What's good for one brother may not be for the other.

If anything, I think it would be better for Kwame than Clifton. Clifton was projected as a late round pick or the possibility of not being drafted. He listened to his family who were advising him to leave. In the end Kwame is his own man but he will be influenced to leave by his family. I have no doubt in my mind about that.

Not statistically, only a role player for the GIANTS, but he now has 2 rings...not bad!!
