UGA reports violation with Crowell

An activity during Isaiah Crowell's visit to UGA's campus has led to a self-reported violation and recruiting penalties for Mark Richt.

  • Similar to the Drew situation, expect this to be a secondary violation. Since UGA took steps to limit Richt's recruit communication already, it is doubtful -- though not impossible -- that NCAA would extend more penalties.

As written above, Crowell was briefly ruled ineligible because of this, but the NCAA has already reinstated him. So this is not an issue moving forward for the player.

  • Know what, I don't mind this as long as it is this small. If everyone else is doing this sort of thing, we should too

  • Keep in mind also that the self-imposed phone call ban on Richt refers to him calling recruits in April. It doesn't say anything about recruits calling him.

    That is the key!!!

  • Cheating is cheating no matter how small the infraction. Self reporting as Georgia is in the habit of doing doesn't make it right or excuse the behavior

  • dear vol fan. no one cares it is not an indoor practice field you ignorant hillbilly. It's an all purpose room used for events and some by the strength and conditioning staff. They have secured the land for the indoor.

  • At least you're not getting players arrested. So, that's good.

  • In all seriousness, is there anything else the NCAA will do here? Yes, the rules are stupid but I'd like us to stop breaking them.

  • McGarity's letter asked that the report be forwarded to the NCAA's Director of Secondary Infractions, which is a good indication that the situation will be viewed as a secondary violation.

Reporting secondaries has become standard procedure for schools who routinely report them in all sports. In the past, the NCAA would do little with secondaries, but only recently has the organization started suspensions for coaches as a result of them. By letter of the law, secondaries are supposed to be isolated and inadvertent. Does this meet that standard? Probably.

As I said up top, it's doubtful -- but not impossible -- for the NCAA to look at this and think more punishment is merited.

Where Richt and UGA need to be careful is attracting attention by logging too many of these in a short period of time. After the Ray Drew thing, this is kind of a strike-two situation.
