Zach Mettenberger

  • How good do you think he will be at LSU this year? Once again, I am still new and just getting my feel of how things are discussed on this board. But I was just curious about what most of yall expect out of him this year.

If this topic is off limits or has been beaten to death then I apologize.

I think ZM will bring a vertical attack aspect to the LSU offense but make no mistake about it. LSU will run the ball and stop the run. That is what they hang their hat on and that is why they are consistently built to compete for the National Championship.

I agree with you completely DawgPound. I think if Mettenberger had started his career at LSU and been ready last year they could have been scary. I still think they will win the west this year.

  • This is just my personal opinion. LSU was so good last year because they played time possession and ball control. They let their defense and special teams make plays. Look at the SEC championship for example. We shut their run down in first half. They came out in second and kept running and wore us out.

Mett makes their offense more dangerous, but I also think it takes away from LSU in what they do best and that is running ball, wearing defenses down, and letting their defense do their thing.

As a UGa fan I was hoping Miles was going to bring Lee in at start of second half bc that is playing in our hands, but he didn't.

  • Despite their struggles, LSU did a great job limiting turnovers at the QB position. They were able to be VERY patient. And had no urgency to force anything because of the success of their run game.

On top of that, Jefferson was a great athlete. I won't say that he single-handedly beat us in 2009. But he lead an 88 yard drive in the 4th quarter that put them up. His throwing was 4-7 for 54 yards (completing on a 3rd and 10). More importantly, his legs ran for 26 yards. He accounted for 80 of those 88 yards.

That is something that I do NOT see Mettenberger bringing to LSU. The ability to create for his offense. He is a gunslinger in an offense built off of conservative playcalling. I do think he will limit his mistakes in the system. But in the 4th quarter when LSU needs a big play, I think his arm will be too big for the moment and fail to get the job done. He's not accurate enough nor experienced enough.

    There are two possibilities IMO:

    1) He is getting used to their system and struggled last year. He may get it and lead LSU to dominance this year but he has to improve.

    OR

    2) Les Miles made one of the worst calls of his career in holding back a dynamic QB with limited years left to play to allow two seniors without a chance at playing in the NFL to slapfight for the oppertunity to rob the team of a national title that their defense could have almost won by itself on a good day.

  • I think ZM will do great. He beat out AM during his short stint at UGA and he has an absolute cannon for an arm. He reminds me a lot of Jay Cutler.

I think #2 is it. I think Mett will be a stud and a house-hold name by season's end. I also think that if he had started last season ala A.J. McCarron and took his lumps early, LSU would've been better for it in the long run. Remember folks, he and AM were running neck and neck before he got himself into trouble...

If he was really neck and neck going into the spring game, he would have been given reps against our #1s and #2s.

Instead, he was only given reps against a defense comprised of our #2s and #3s (and if you look a college roster, #3s typically includes a lot of walkons).

The sheer fact that he didn't get any opportunities against our best defensive players tells me that he wasn't as close as is being portrayed.

yeah, he is right ZM won the starting job at UGA and was set to take over, until he got in so much trouble we booted him during the summer. Then Murray got the job, he was expected to have being so highly ranked out of high school.

    rddocwho

  • he is not right Murray was absolutely the starter coming out of Spring that year. The competition was going to continue but ZM was never listed as QB1 by the coaching staff.

  • I wish AM had ZM's height. That would be a deadly combination, but then again, if my aunt had testicles she'd be my uncle.

Life's tough, but it is tougher if you're stupid.
