for those not lamenting the loss of blake jackson............

  • let me remind all of us of something very huge.

    the team that took us to the woodshed last saturday night had a roster stocked full of nothing but playmakers like blake jackson, and they had them at every position. this is precisely the depth we supposedly seek.

    to say that it isn't a big deal is to dismiss the very thing that makes bama and lsu what they are.

    it is a big deal to lsu if they lose a quality playmaker, and it should be the same for us. if we don't demand and expect to have the very best at every single position, then we will never have them. you don't get it unless you ask for it.

    we must stock our cupboards full every year with kids like jackson, theus, malcolm mitchell and keith marshall if we're going to compete long term for national titles. just doing it one year or two in a row will NOT cut it.

    as much as i hate to use them as an example, the floridas, bamas and lsu teams of the last ten years are examples of what we should aspire to, especially as it relates to stockpiling talent. it is painfully obvious that we also must develop talent and stay healthy to win it all, but you must first have superior talent if you want to develop superior players. developing a roster of walk ons and 3 star kids with a lot of heart will not take the place of stud athletes, especially on those special teams units that we cringed at last saturday.

    yes, i know there are lots of other factors that go into putting together successful teams, but you can't make steak suppers out of ground chuck.

    Bama has NO playmakers on offense. Just 1 workhorse TB. They'd KILL to have the talent at skill positions that UGA does....This is a stupid argument....

    That doesn't mean losing Blake Jackson wasn't significant. He's a game changer just like Orson Charles. We just need to figure out how to utilize the talents of game changers. OSU has that figured out....my assumption is that weighed heavily in his decision. OC had 44 catches this year and should have had 60+

  • So should we have over sign like Bama and LSU instead of having a limit on scholly's most people say the reason Saban and Miles win championships is they will go over the limit if they have to even brake the rules .

  • I hear what you're saying but what are you going to do? It's recruiting, we're not going to get every kid we want, nobody does. It hurts to lose a talented recruit but it's their choice, if they want to go somewhere else what can you do? We just got a helluva RB and we've got more spots to fill, this class will be fine

  • Blake Jackson is a JUCO transfer and we still have Arthur Lynch and Jay Rome at TE. Not to mention a QB from Florida that looks like they play TE.

    If Orson sticks around for his senior year, there is not much of a dire need for Blake on the team.

    We need linemen in droves more than we need multiple tightends.

  • No they have their depth because of oversigning which was outlawed by the SEC this year. When you get 30 to 40 signees a year by oversigning and manipulate the system by having a tryout and picking out the best, and grey shirting a few and saying good bye to rest, then over 3 to 4 year time period, you can have alot of "Players"? Georgia has not and never will use these practices. UGA does the right thing.
    We only want players that want to be DAWGS! Understanding that the "recruiting practices" is how we teach them that they want to be dawgs. Look how many kids over the last 2 years want to be Dawgs! I wish we would have gotten Blake but this is not the big deal you are making it to be.
    Yes, i am with you on getting the best players and we will. You will see a difference over the next few years in the crazy depth of these teams since the oversigning is now policed.
    To aspire to recruit in the wrong ways in which our competitors is riduculous. Would you want your son recruited in the way that these teams that you Alabama and LSU and others have recruited in the past? I would not ...Hell no, never. If any of my sons were recruited in that manner and then treated like some of these kids are , I would beat somebodys ass for doing that to my son. Maybe you would , but I know most Dawg Fans would not!
    You have to ask yourself. What are you teaching these kids? Do we want to win at any cost? Even at these kids expense? I say Hell no!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • To win championships is that its start at O-line in the trenches that what all those great Bama , LSU , UF's teams had is a great line not because of one TE.

  • We also have Ty Smith coming in correct...relax....but I would say I agree in 1 respect...we need to protect our border....there is too much talent in this state getting away because we got to the dance late...i.e. Dillon Lee

    I'm happy with the recruting effort, but if we protect our border, we will win Championships.

  • Cant please everyone! Im proud of what we have and what we are going to get. I think we need to turn the heat up on Patterson though and Gurley. With Tibbs coming (who i think is going to be a great one) and the rest of this class we already have and then in the class '13 we are going to be a very good team and i like the way our team is heading!!rockon

  • That is why i am glad we got Theus and Pyke i hope we get Young and Beard need to build that O -line i am exited about Marshall feel good about Patterson .

    can't blame the coaches for dillon lee. stuff like that happens when you have a coaching change at that position. and it isn't over by any means with him either. and also, sometimes guys like geno smith just want to play their ball away from home so all things considered, i think we do a pretty good job recruiting our state while still having the ability to pull guys out of state.

    It was not hard to figure out. He went there and saw their offense. Great - but he should have paid attention to the depth and defense. He was probably enamored with the money being spent on the program as well. All Great - but if he was so great coming out of high school - he would not have had to go JUCO route.

    Notice that LSU is full of Sophomores not JUCO players. That does not take anything from Jackson but we are not lacking depth at TE.

    Richtfan - you want play makers and stars - wait till you see Rome on the field. He is a future NFL tight end. Watch Artie Lynch and the hard work he has a put in will show up next year as well.

    I personally think that Jackson did not like the depth issue but maybe a factor was not so much passing. However, Orson will be pro ready because he has improved his blocking tremendously this year and has proven he is a total TE.

    Good points - also don't discount the great class we had last year. That pushes away guys that are scared of competition - regardless of what they say in public. That is not the case with Dillion Lee but I think that is the case with others for sure.....

  • it is unlikely that charles sticks around, so we have to plan as if he won't.

    rome has seen zero action, which is fairly customary for a TE at uga these days due to the talent ahead of him.

    lynch has caught fewer than 5 passes in his career, so we don't know what he can or cannot do. he's ripped, but that says nothing about his ability to stretch the field and create mismatches with linebackers and safeties.

    i will agree that we need linemen much more than tight ends. but our staff doesn't seem to grasp this concept. if they did, we would be looking to sign at least 3 and maybe 4 true OT prospects instead of 2.

  • at one time i would have agreed that doing things above board was the way to go. we all know saban is a scumbag and will do anything to manipulate the system to his liking. however, we started out the year with about 77 or 78 scholarship guys. now, ealey and king left after signing day so that accounts for 2 of them. but don't you think that mark and the coaches had at least a good idea that neither would make it and could have accounted for that in the numbers? this is where we have not done our jobs as well as we could have. having those extra 5-7 scholarship guys helps out a lot, especially in that all important special teams area. you may not be able to account for starters in that number, but you surely can account for special teams guys and depth along the OL, which we sorely need and have always needed. leaving ships on the table to assuage our conscience as coaches is just as disingenuous as oversigning and cutting kids due to issues not related to on field performance. i'm not advocating doing that. but there is no luxury of having extra ships. it simply doesn't exist. therefore, we have to take ealey and king and make a better assessment and plan for that inevitability, at least in their case. we do not need to enter any more seasons with fewer than 83 or 84 guys. you can't help it if a guy gets hurt in the summertime, but you can decide in january or december if a kid's attitude is such that he's not going to get it done and then plan accordingly for the next season.

  • i bet bama has several running backs that would have started at uga this year, and i know they have 2 and maybe 3 deep at every OL and DL position. but they don't settle too often for 3 star kids who just wanna wear their colors because that's how they grew up. they go after the kids who are in it to win it. i'd say mays is a playmaker. darius hanks is a very good wideout. he ain't aj green, but nobody else is either. but look at their offense as well. it is fairly vanilla. besides stud running backs, their offense does not dictate that you have too many superior skill players. then look at their defense. all americans at nearly every position with high school all americans behind them on the depth chart.

    they have chosen to stack their D with monster players up and down. that's saban's way. no dropoffs on defense if someone goes down with an injury. just send the next guy in.

    They may not settle on 3 star OL and DL's? I think they get them and coach them up. I'd be willing to bet if you go back and look at their past recruiting classes of OL and DL's you would be surprised at how many 4 or 5 starts they actually got. The difference is that they have been coaching them up on those two fronts which I believe we are now doing better at this as well.

  • Maybe losing Jackson is huge, maybe not. He may turn out to be great, but I caution you with regards to assigning "play maker" status to a kid in high school simply based on what you see on his highlight reel, and the # of stars by his name. The best "play maker" on that LSU team (Mathieu) was a kid that only received 2 other offers, and LSU offered him at the last minute when a a scholly opened up.
