You have no favorite boards.
you CAN count on kids leaving the program for whatever reason between today and August.
You CANNOT, however, predict when kids are going to get injured or where kids might not be physically able to contribute.
This is where we fail. You can look up and down this roster and see some glaring things--at least I can and I am far from clairvoyant. I can see that there might be at least one rb who will likely be gone by August and that might become 2 instead of one. I can see that at least 1 OL may not be able to continue and get through the year physically. Always saying to yourself "next year's crop of guys is so much better" is simply a cop out for this year's whiffs. True OT prospects don't grow on trees, and the really good ones who can contribute early are even more rare. We have to get these kids and mold them into players. That doesn't happen overnight.
As a fan I am not dwelling on what we did early on . I think about those 10 straight that we pulled off. Not even Bama reeled off that many. we made a substantial turnaround from last year.
Agree completely. We have to recruit numbers because things unexpected happen.

You can't also predict which school a prospect is going to select when they aren't deciding until signing day and not informing the schools of their decisions until then. Our coaches were recruiting for numbers and unfortunately, some guys decided to select another school. UGA is not in the business of accepting more commitments than they have room for (cough cough Bama). I'm excited about our signing class and I can't wait to see what they do this fall!
take last year for example. we could have counted on at least one of the running backs to be gone. maybe not 2, but we could have thought at least ealey would be gone. instead, we waited on the inevitable to happen and then were caught with our fly open come signing day 2011. that very situation hosed us when crowell went down.
Just because next years crop is stacked does not mean they will want to come to UGA. I hope they sign the max next year but like you said it is a cop out to keep saying next year will be great. I appreciate everyone that signed this year because they want to be a Bulldog. It does worry me that if we hadn't flipped the two Dawsons we would be at 16 or 17(depending on the JHC situation).
I agree, richtfan.
But in terms of "attrition", I think the coaching staff has some munition with the kids to talk them into hanging in there.
Ealey walks (or is pushed)... and we started a former walkon for a game.
Hitman walks (after an injury)... and we are transferring cornerbacks to safety to field enough players.
Dowtin walks (or is pushed)... and in the very first game of the season, we had to throw a walk-on out there after an injury to the starter.
If you want to leave because you are unhappy... that's fine.
If you want to leave because you feel you deserve more opportunities and playing time... you/re crazy. You're always one snap away.
Kudo's to Shawn Williams and Michael Gilliard (neither had a firm grasp on the 2-deep at their positions last January). They made the most of their opportunities and are DGDs.
The coaches should be able to do a better job going forward to keep the guys satisfied with competing for spots.
