how big of a hit?

  • What do you guys think of our chances of winning the SEC or MNC this year now that IC is gone? I think we took about a 20% hit because of the game breaking talent we just lost.

  • Yes the pressure of the season does fall on AM. but i think IC took away a lot of that pressure. With him gone does AM now feel the need to force things instead of checking out off a play and handing it off or forcing a ball in to double coverage instead of hitting IC in the Flats. Will the pups be able to pass block? losing IC will big a major lost. More then most people think IMO

  • I have faith in KM, TG, and Ken Malcome. I really think Keith Marshall is going to be a special player for us.

I honestly think we did take a hit by losing Isaiah. Some will simply say, "Look at our depth chart", etc. We are entering this season in almost the exact situation as last. Much better depth but still relying on Freshmen to make an impact. We relied heavily on veterans (Samuel/Thomas) and then was hoping to be bailed out by Freshmen (IC and Boo). This year, Boo and Samuel take the veteran roles and enter Gurley and Marshall as the Freshmen and future.

Isaiah Crowell was special. Period. As far as us winning a SEC or MNC, I don't think a RB can make that big of difference. I think the weight of this season falls on #11. If he protects the ball, doesn't make the same mistakes in big situations he's been accustomed to make, and makes sound decisions, with our D, the sky is the limit.

I think UGA will still rush for roughly the same amount of yards this year as they would have 1 week ago. Difference is IC won't be getting the carries and yardage.

We are not entering this year in the same situation as last year.

    1. We have a fleet or running backs that are more than capaable. Yes 2 are freshman - but one has been on campus since january showing an amazing work ethic. The other came in June but has a reputation for total team player with an extreme work ethic. Marshall is in great shape. Gurley is as well. I think Malcolme will be fine but RB by committee should be fine this year where as last year we had guys not really fittin gthe bill to be RBs at a upper tier SEC school. Not the case this year.

    2. We have a stud defense ready to go with more than ample leadership. we have to address the suspensions but as long as we avoid injuries early to some key players we should be fine against Missouri.

    3. We have a lot of depth at OL - regardless of experience. We will be young but we will also be better fit than we were in the past. We will also have more guys in the right positions rather than taking the best guys we have and playing them out of position.

    4. We have another off season in the new S&C. We have improved S&C with some key positions. Wait to see the impact of Armstrong on both agility of our big guys and speed of our skill players.

    5. CMR has not had to address the issues of the hot seat. That is a question for a few other programs that have to handle the pressure. See how they handle that pressure - UT and UF pirmarily.

    6. We get our players back for the SC game even if the full suspensions are required. That is not something we have had in the last few years. We should be geared up and ready to go.

    5. We had a small class in 2012 but we had some serious skill in that class. It will be interesting to see how that plays into the mix with summer and the fall.

There is a ton to look forward to right now and reason to be optimistic. But we need our players to be ready and to step out and be ready.

  • We just lost a potential first round draft pick at RB.... Its a big hit.

Everyone tried to say we wouldn't take a hit when Moreno left either cause King and Ealey were just as highly touted, but we all know how that worked out.

  • Anyone who claims we didn't take a hit losing Crowell shouldn't be taken serious. He is arguably the best talent at RB that we have had since HW34.

Having said that, who knows how our W/L will play out due to this. May end up worse may end up better. But as far as if we took a hit, yes we did.

  • Marshall has a work ethic that will virtually negate his lack of experience, which he has already started to address with early enrollment. he will be a team leader for the next few years and that goes a long way towards forgetting Crowell.

  • For the record, I am a believer in Boo. A full season of him is a great asset to the team.

I think that there is a HUGE difference between a great back and a back who can create positive yardage with a struggling offensive line. Boo creates positive yardage. And that is HUGE for us in 2012.

The other backs might be fine. Might be great. But if they can't get beyond that first guy behind the line of scrimmage (ala Moreno), then they won't get a chance to show off their speed and muscle.

Boo has a small track record against some very good defenses that has me optimistic for him getting 40% of our carries right now. If his body can hold up (and if it takes time for someone else to step up), his carries might go up for the same reason why we rode Crowell so hard for much of last season.

He played a half season and was nagged by injuries the whole way. I'd say that's a very outlandish. You're talking about the HYPE. I'm talking about REALITY. He never lived up to the hype. You can't say he was the best talent at RB since Herschel Walker when he played for half a season. That's hype man.

  • I think I'll have to agree with Hobnail above. What IC did last year was good, but not great. 850 yards is not greatness. I don't recall many clutch runs. I don't recall a lot of extra-extra effort. I don't recall any 70 or 80 yard TD runs. What I do recall is IC showing up out of shape. IC tapping his helmet after a couple of runs. IC sitting out portions of and whole games for disciplinary reasons, IC limping a lot, and a lot of shots of IC SITTING BY HIMSELF on the bench.

Potential is one thing, fulfillment is another. Georgia will run the ball just as much as it would have with IC. I gaurantee you. Those carries will now go to Boo, Marshall, and Gurley. And IC nor any of the aforemention backs will be very effective unless we can find 7 or 8 OL who can play.

Sometime it's not what a guy is worth to you that counts, but what he costs you. Who can measure the positive or negative impact this will have on team chemistry? The biggest hit Georgia will take from this is public relations, like we needed that. Herbsteit will tie a rope around this and drag it around the yard every chance he gets, and Mark May already has a woody that has lasted longer than 4 hours.
