There is plenty of value in it. Tradition, recruiting, family and friend events this game has been a part of all our lives since the day we where born. Unless your a 120 years old.

It's all about tv markets. The bigger cities you can add to your "base" then the more money networks are going to give to your conference to carry your games. Texas A & M = adding Houston tv market - BIG bucks & Missouri = adding St. Louis tv market - BIG bucks.

They (presidents and Board of directors) leave history and tradition to the AD's to sort out. They get to tell the taxpayers of their state's that they are doing a good job and that they should get a raise because see, look at all of the money we are bringing into the university...

ok. we are going to agree to disagree on this I'm sure, but please riddle me these things.

tradition...........for the same reasons that I think playing in Jax is stupid, playing AU every is equally stupid. Traditions start because someone does something different. If we were really holding to tradition, we'd still play in Columbus. NEW traditions start because things are done differently.

recruiting..........how many players do we get from Alabama who ever amount to anything? The last one may have been Mitch Davis 20 yrs ago. Now, it is true that we recruit many of the same players that AU does, but we aren't getting players from their state when we beat them and look good doing it. I think that players look at the total package, the entire body of work and the overall record rather than your performance against one other team when they make a school decision.

We have benefited less especially in the last 45 years from playing Auburn than they have benefited. We have lost more SEC titles playing in their stadium than we've ever won. I just don't see it.

And the same goes for Tech. We gain NOTHING from beating them every year except a short lived bit of bragging rights. it is much bigger for them than it is for us.

I think tradition is extremely important in life. In this crazy world, where everything seems to change from one moment to the next, it is important to have some constants in life and traditional rivalries are a constant. No matter how bad your year is going as a team, you can always look forward to those traditional rivalries, if for no other reason than just good old fashioned hate of your enemy so to speak. Rivalries with other states schools, bring out the pride in your program. Look how close the record is between UGA and Auburn, and even Florida and UGA, although I think we are just now getting back into that game, after a decade long struggle. I will grant you that the Georgia Tech. rivalry hasn't historically been much of one, at least overall and certainly not in the past decade, but it is a matter of state pride. Not to mention the fact, that the Tech. fans act so elitist that is is just fun to beat their butts, LOL. Traditions breed pride in ones school, and even in recruiting, can be a good point if you can point to your school and boast about the record and the tradition, that the rivalry has caused. Auburn versus UGA has over one hundred years of history and many great games played, and to give that up, just to increase the TV market, and get even more money in the conference, seems rather stupid to me. History is the teacher for the future and we don't need to give up our foundation and roots when the conference is already healthy and the strongest conference in the NCAA as it is.

It was the first game my father and i attended together. And the first game my daughter and I attended. So for my on selfish reasons, I for one would like to see it continue. +1.

Auburn fan here. I completely disagree with the OP. This game is the biggest game in the SEC (as far as tradition is concerned). I think its safe to say if either fan base had known it was going to be a possibility that this rivalry had died by adding aTm and Mizz, I think everyone would have told those 2 teams to screw themselves and stay out of our way. I never would have thought that this would have been the rivalry at jeopardy. I would care less about keeping the iron bowl. The deep souths oldest rivalry is much more important in my eyes. I don't know what that statistic is for how many AU alumni live in Georgia by I can almost bet its more than in Alabama. I would hate to see this rivalry end.

I'm an Auburn fan/grad and my youngest son a grad of UGA. I'd hate to loose the fun we have on game day when AU plays UGA.

Amen to that. I'd add Tennessee to that, too. What Suwanee doesn't understand is that college football is all about tradition. When you think of schools like Notre Dame, USC, Michigan, OSU, Penn State, Alabama, etc., these are schools with loads of tradition, and kids attend and people route for these teams for that only reason. Come on, what has notre dame done lately? But they seem to recruit great talent every year just because its Notre Dame! College football is all about rivalries. Thats what makes it better than the NFL. There are just some games that you can't touch and UGA/AU is one of them.
