questions of the day

  • I know it's way too early... but it's football questions.

Will Marlon Brown have his Kris Durham season if he can stay healthy?

Will Murray and Bobo finally find ways to punish overly aggressive defenses like Michigan State with an effective runningback screen?

Do we have the personnel on the interior line to effectively punish an outside passrush with a draw play?

  • 1. No. IMO Kris Durham came at the right time. Outside of AJ, we really didn't have much. I believe we have a lot more talent throughout the whole group now which will limit the impact that Marlon can make. Not saying Marlon is any better or worse than Durham (I believe if he can stay on the field he can be better), but mainly that his opportunities to breakout like Durham are going to be a lot less.
    2. Yes... IFF we can run the football when we want.
    3. Yes, we have the players, but scheme is a big factor in the success of that scenario as well.

  • fyi---the swing pass or screen to a RB is useless if you have crappy OL play. Our success basically starts and ends on the OL.

  • Some perspective on the questions...
Durham was a big target who showed flashes of doing a few things really well throughout his injured career at UGA.

But when he was presented an opportunity as a senior where he was healthy, had a grasp of how to attack a defense within Richt's system, and had a QB who throws the ball up and appreciates big targets to bring em down... Durham flourished as a legitimate threat in the passing game who showed he can execute any route and bring some big play ability with those opportunities.

Marlon has equally showed an ability to flourish with some screens and hook routes.
He's been in the system for a while and should be on the same page with Murray.
He has T King and some reps with Mitchell to take the attention of the secondary and create opportunities.
And most importantly, he's that long type of receiver which Murray can develop a trust.

Dawg fans have been looking for big contributions for quite some time from Brown. I think he's going to emerge as a very dangerous #2 target for Murray.

  • I was thinking about the 17 tackles for a loss against Michigan State. They were blitzing into the gaps pretty aggressively against us. This plugged any holes to basically make an interior run game non-existant.
And if the designed play was a pass, we were under pressure and required to provide more 'max protect' blocking schemes.

How do you counteract this? You do it with runningback screens.

How many times last season did we see a 7 and 8 man wall stuffing the run game at the line of scrimmage? I'd guess virtually every time we lined up with a fullback or had the HBack off-tackle.

Unfortunately, Murray has not had a lot of success with screens or much of a passing game to the runningbacks. My hope is that Murray develops maturity in the pocket to find better throwing lanes to avoid the passes batted down and lobs just out of reach of our backs.

If we can complete these against those defenses that want to use the speed of their linebackers to jump into the interior run gaps, we can hit some big gainers and punish some of that aggressive defensive style that gave us fits last season.

  • great questions.

    1. hopefully. if he stays healthy, i really believe that MB will ball out this year.

    2. yes. murray seems to have a bit of trouble throwing screens now and again, but with the explosive players we have in the backfield we need to be throwing screens like we did against USCe. i rewatched the outback bowl recently and noticed that they DESTROYED our right side. burnette wasn't great, but bean was just horrible. he short-circuited everything we were trying to do offensively. we had to use backs and TE's to help him because he couldn't handle gholston. he flat missed his assignment and didn't block anyone on at least 3 of the negative yardage plays. i was shocked at just how bad he was. i think burnette continues to improve and kolton houston becomes a force at RT. we will run to the right side A LOT this year. plus, i really like dallas lee at LG.

    3. yes. andrews will only get better at C (esp. battling jenkins and geathers every day during fall practice), and lee and burnette are serious SEC-level OG's. lee was probably our best and most consistent OL last year when he was healthy, and burnette -- remember, last year was his first on the field -- will continue to improve. some positive signs during the G day game make me feel good about our first 5. it's the guys behind them -- austin long, dantzler, mark beard -- that worry me. CMB said he wants 8 guys who are ready to play, and i think that's exactly right.

I think the area that's toughest for a Center is when his responsibility is to get to the second level and get on a linebacker. This is typically when you are facing a 4-3 defense.

Ben Jones struggled on occasion in this (see the Kentucky, Boise, and Vandy games off the top of my head).

I worry about a young guy like Andrews being focused on a good exchange and then being in charge of getting a hat on some of the athletic linebackers that just always have a knack for getting to the ballcarrier (Trevathan, Garnham, etc).

  • Marlon Brown? I predict another average year.
    Kris durham=michael Bennett IMO

We have done the screens. Last year against SC, Crowell took one to the house. Just need to do more and set it up better.

Right now, I say no. but I am cautiously optomistic that by game 4 or 5 we will be better at it.

Art Schlichter's cellmates and Mo Clarett's rugby team believe Ohio State always does things honestly.....

  • Fwiw..

I think you both are making some good points and its been a good conversation. I'd kinda fall in between you two.

    5 ypc is too much.

66 yards in 3 qtrs vs one of the top 3 backs in college is good.
