Morning Coffee: Hello, bye week

Without the usual practice, Georgia's football players got back to work Monday, starting their bye week with another screening of Saturday night's loss at South Carolina.

"I wished we'd have met with them (Sunday) and got it over with, because there was still a lot of hurting going on today," offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said while filling in for Mark Richt on Monday night's call-in radio show.

Looking back, Bobo said the South Carolina loss was "embarrassing."

"There's not any excuse that you can sit up here and say," Bobo said. "We did not perform our best, and South Carolina came out, and they whipped us. ... There's a lot of guys that are extremely disappointed. That's our job as coaches to help them rebound and get ready to go."

Georgia's team will practice three times during the bye week, going Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before breaking for a free weekend, during which most players will take a rare in-season opportunity to head back home and visit with family and friends.

Prior to that, the Bulldogs' three practices, Bobo said, will involve some work on Kentucky, a lot of work on fundamentals and "good against good," which means the first offense will be matched at times against the first defense in scrimmage situations.

Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, also filling in on Richt's radio show, said explosive plays are on his agenda this week for a defense that has given up too many big plays in six games.

"Our job as coaches and players is to get that fixed," Grantham said. "That's the first thing you've got to do right there. We're going to take this bye week to correct those things to make sure everybody understands the importance of respecting the deep part of the field so those things don't happen. ... Number one, we've got to get some guys healthy. Number two, we've got to develop some continuity with some guys at the positions they're playing right now and they've been doing it for the last couple of weeks."

Despite the disappointment of the loss, Bobo stressed the Bulldogs can learn from it and still finish strong this season.

"Sometimes people want to push the panic button. 'The world's come to the end. Georgia's season is over.' Our season isn't over," Bobo said. "There's a lot left to play for. ... We still believe that we've got a chance to be very good. There's some things we've got to learn. Sometimes things aren't going to go as easy as they've gone the first five weeks. We've got to handle ourselves a little better when we get hit in the mouth and you're playing against a defense that's stopping you. You've got to hold yourselves with a little poise and realize that things don't come easy and just keep fighting. I think we're going to learn a lot from that."

Tuesday will also belong to the UGA basketball programs. It's preseason media day for hoops, with Mark Fox and Andy Landers set to address reporters around noon today (the usual time for Mark Richt's weekly press conference that isn't happening this time).

The coaching axe fell early at Georgia Tech on Monday.

And an event of vandalism Saturday night to a Georgia players' home continues to make headlines.
